It’s World Wetlands Day and for the 21st year people around the world have come together to celebrate and protect these vital ecosystems. This year’s theme is Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future for wetlands aren’t just important in the African bush, but all around the world as well. As many would suspect, where humans tend to congregate, wetlands are most at risk. In fact, 50% of the world’s population now lives in cities, an unprecedented percentage. It is vital that cities actively protect their resident wetlands; for humans, animals and the water that we all depend upon, deserve
All of us at safariLIVE take great pride in sharing our natural environment with you; your support and appreciation of this amazing wilderness helps protect it for future generations. However, we also encourage you to not forget the wildernesses in your own backyards. The wetlands in your communities are as equally important as the ones on Djuma. As the fates of all living things on our planet are connected, advocating for your local wetland will contribute to the protection of all of the world’s ecosystems and its wildlife – even the ones that you may only ever see on your TV screen.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February. This day marks the date of the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971. The Convention now has 170 signatories and has 490,000,000 acres of wetlands under its protection.
